Platform Update: More Accurate Event Data and an Improved PIO Calendar Bookshelf

The PIO Calendar has completed another significant platform update focused on accuracy, reliability, and improved reporting.

This update strengthens how event information is reviewed and maintained, improves the accuracy of event and promotional reporting, and adds several new features to The PIO Calendar Bookshelf.

Together, these improvements help us maintain a more dependable calendar while giving readers, event organizers, authors, and publishers better tools for understanding how their listings are performing.

More Accurate Event Information

We completed a broad review of how event information is used throughout The PIO Calendar.

Event dates, locations, organizers, status information, and other important details are now handled more consistently across the platform, including in:

This work helps ensure that the information displayed publicly matches the information used behind the scenes for reporting and promotion.

Improved Event Review and Duplicate Detection

The PIO Calendar receives event information from many sources, including event organizers, public websites, monitored sources, imports, and community submissions.

Sometimes an event submitted by an organizer may already exist on the calendar. The updated review process provides better tools for identifying these possible duplicates before another listing is created.

Potential matches can now be evaluated using information such as:

When two records represent the same event, they can be compared and merged while preserving the existing public event page, URL, status, and available analytics.

This helps prevent duplicate listings without losing useful information submitted by an organizer.

Better Event Performance Reports

Event Performance Reports have been updated to provide more complete and accurate information.

Reports can now more reliably include:

Filtering for upcoming and past events has also been improved.

These reports are designed to help us—and participating event organizers—better understand how events are being discovered and promoted through The PIO Calendar.

More Reliable Platform Statistics

We also improved how events are counted throughout the platform.

New-event goals, featured-event activity, event totals, and event-by-event statistics now use the same authoritative event information.

This creates greater consistency between administrative reports, public statistics, promotional reporting, and the event listings visitors see.

Historical information can also be rebuilt using the corrected event data, allowing improvements to apply to existing records rather than only to events added after the update.

An Improved PIO Calendar Bookshelf

The PIO Calendar Bookshelf continues to grow, and several improvements have been made to help readers explore its expanding collection.

The Bookshelf promotional section on the homepage has been redesigned for mobile devices. The published-book count now appears on its own row, with featured book covers displayed in a larger and more recognizable grid.

The full Bookshelf also includes filters for:

The new Special Offers filter includes books with an active retailer sale or a PIO Calendar reader coupon.

Offers can be scheduled in advance, and expired offers are removed automatically. Offers without a specified end date can remain available until they are manually updated.

Better Bookshelf Analytics

Bookshelf analytics have also been expanded to help measure reader interest while respecting visitor privacy.

Available information may include:

Books can be filtered and sorted by title, views, clicks, reviews, and other performance measures. Retailer and format activity can also be grouped, filtered, and sorted to make the information easier to understand.

Shareable Reports for Authors and Publishers

Individual Bookshelf performance reports can now be exported as branded PDF documents.

Reports can be prepared for internal use or shared with an author or publisher. Depending on the selected options, a report may include:

The report can also exclude purchase responses when they are not needed.

These reports provide authors and publishers with a clearer picture of the visibility and engagement their books receive through The PIO Calendar.

What This Means for the Community

For most visitors, these changes should create a more dependable and useful experience.

The improvements are designed to help you:

Continuing to Improve

The PIO Calendar continues to grow as a free, community-supported resource for public information officers, government communicators, emergency managers, public safety personnel, authors, educators, and partner organizations.

As more events, books, organizations, and resources are added, maintaining accurate and trustworthy information becomes even more important.

This update strengthens that foundation while adding practical new tools for the people and organizations contributing to the platform.

If you notice information that needs to be corrected—or have an idea that could make The PIO Calendar or Bookshelf better—we would love to hear from you.

Every submission, correction, review, and suggestion helps us build a more accurate, accessible, and valuable resource for the public information and communications community.
