The PIO Calendar has completed one of its most significant platform updates to date.
This update improves how events are organized, displayed, searched, and managed across the website. Visitors will find a cleaner and more consistent experience, while event organizers and administrators have better tools for maintaining accurate listings.
Together, these improvements make it easier to find the right professional development opportunity—and easier for us to keep the calendar accurate and useful.
Improved Event Listings
The main events calendar has been redesigned to make opportunities easier to browse and compare.
Visitors can search and filter events by information such as:
- Opportunity type
- In-person, virtual, or hybrid format
- Price
- State
- Date range
Event listings now present dates, locations, descriptions, pricing, and important status information in a more consistent format.
The experience has also been improved for mobile devices, making it easier to search and review opportunities from a phone or tablet.
More Informative Event Pages
Individual event pages now bring important details together in one place.
Depending on the event, visitors may see:
- Event dates and location
- In-person, virtual, or hybrid format
- Registration information
- Pricing and available registration options
- Registration deadlines
- Waitlist or sold-out status
- Save-the-date notices
- Call for proposals or speakers
- Event organizers and affiliated organizations
- Presenters or instructors
- Public contact information
- Links to related courses and resources
This expanded structure allows the calendar to better represent everything from a single training class to a conference with multiple registration options.
Clearer and More Consistent Pricing
We improved how event costs are recorded and displayed.
Events can now be identified as:
- Free
- Paid with one price
- Available within a price range
- Available with multiple named options
- Price not yet published
This helps prevent confusing displays and makes it easier to distinguish a course with one registration fee from a conference offering early-bird, virtual, member, or other pricing options.
Stronger Organization Connections
Events can now be connected more directly to the organization or association responsible for hosting them.
Organization profiles can display their upcoming events, and event pages can link visitors back to the appropriate organization profile. Events may also include partner organizations, independent organizers, related courses, and public contacts.
These connections help visitors explore more opportunities from organizations they recognize and trust.
Better Support for Event Changes
Event information does not always remain static. Registration may close, an event may be rescheduled, or a conference may begin as a save-the-date announcement before full details are available.
The updated platform provides better support for statuses such as:
- Registration not yet open
- Registration closed
- Waitlist available
- Sold out
- Invite only
- Save the date
- Call for proposals
- Rescheduled
- Postponed
- Cancelled
An event can also have more than one relevant status. For example, complete conference information may be available while its call for proposals remains open.
Improved Accuracy and Quality Controls
We have added new tools to help identify missing or inconsistent information before it affects visitors.
These checks review important details such as:
- Event dates
- Attendance format
- Location
- Pricing
- Registration links
- Organization relationships
- Featured images
- Presenters and instructors
- Publicly displayed status information
Historical event information and existing links are also being preserved wherever possible so previously shared event URLs continue directing visitors to the appropriate listing.
What This Means for Visitors
For most visitors, the biggest difference should be a clearer and more useful calendar.
These updates are designed to help you:
- Find relevant opportunities more quickly
- Compare events more easily
- Understand registration and pricing information
- Identify virtual, hybrid, and in-person opportunities
- Discover other events from the same organization
- View event information more comfortably on mobile devices
- Reach the correct registration or information page
Continuing to Improve
The PIO Calendar serves a growing community of public information officers, communications professionals, emergency managers, public safety personnel, government communicators, and partner organizations.
As the number and variety of opportunities continue to grow, the platform must grow with them.
This update creates a stronger foundation for future improvements while delivering a more consistent and useful experience today.
If you find an event that needs to be corrected—or have an idea that could make the calendar better—we would love to hear from you.
Every report and suggestion helps us build a more accurate, accessible, and valuable resource for the public information and communications community.
