SUMMARY:Preparedness Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Preparedness Summit is the first and longest-running national conference on public health preparedness. Since its beginning in 2007\, the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) has taken a leadership role in convening a wide array of partners to participate in the Summit; presenting new research findings\, sharing tools and resources\, and providing a variety of opportunities for attendees to learn how to implement model practices that enhance the nation’s capabilities to prepare for\, respond to\, and recover from disasters and other emergencies. \nOver the last decade\, the nature of threats to our national health security have changed significantly. As professionals in the public health preparedness space\, we can expect these threats to continue to evolve. It is imperative that we adapt our public health practices to meet the demands of an ever-evolving threat environment. But how do we\, as preparedness leaders\, help our communities become more prepared to respond to and recover from uncharted catastrophic events? We can start doing so by discovering new and creative solutions to address events like pandemic diseases\, the opioid crisis\, active shooter emergencies\, and cybersecurity threats. \nEach year\, the Preparedness Summit features experts from the healthcare and emergency management fields in addition to public health preparedness professionals to address the gaps between these life-saving industries in an effort to work more collaboratively and efficiently in the face of emerging threats. Reaching across these sectors leverages diversity of thought and advances the capacity of our communities to respond to and recover from emergency events. We hope that this conference will provide an opportunity to build stronger partnerships and encourage us to find innovative solutions with our allies.

SUMMARY:FEMA E/L0388 Advanced Public Information Officer
DESCRIPTION:The National Response Framework (NRF) and the National Incident Management System (NIMS) devote significant attention to the importance of emergency public information. Public Information Officers are key members of the ICS and EOC organizations\, and work closely with officials who are part of Multiagency Coordination Groups. PIOs advise the Incident Commander\, Unified Command\, and EOC director on public information relating to incident management. \nWith public information included as a function within NIMS and within ICS\, it is critical to address and provide training for this important element of Emergency Management. \nThe National Disaster & Emergency Management University (NDEMU) Public Information Officer (PIO) training curriculum includes courses delivered at the awareness\, basic\, advanced and master levels. The basic level course was developed by NDEMU and is managed by NDEMU or state emergency management trainers who teach basic skills and techniques for use during small\, localized\, single-agency responses; preparedness campaigns; and escalating localized responses. \nThe advanced level course teaches participants additional skills for use during escalating incidents\, including strategic communications and incident action planning as it relates to Joint Information Center (JIC) operations.

DESCRIPTION:Building off of the FBI-LEEDA Media & Public Relations course\, the Master Public Information Officer course moves the participant from the tactical to the strategic level of media and brand management. Participants will spend 4 ½ days exploring; the business model of media engagement\, take a deeper dive into cultivating a brand image through internal and external communications\, and learn how to proactively pitch stories in today’s 24/7 news environment. Students will learn the advanced means of creating high-quality in-house videos for social media\, develop messaging calendars\, and learn the art of being a strategic advisor. This course will build on crisis management skills in tabletop exercises designed to build the framework for a crisis communication manual. SUMMARY:EMEAA: Mental Health for PIOs with Chief Reardon
DESCRIPTION:Chief Reardon will discuss first-hand experiences with response\, the aftermath of sensitive incidents\, and the mental health impact PIO professionals must keep in mind. \n\n\n\nWith over 26 years in the fire service\, including 23 years with the Duxbury Fire Department\, Chief Rob Reardon currently serves as Fire Chief and Director of Emergency Management for the Town of Duxbury\, Massachusetts. A recognized leader in public safety\, Chief Reardon is a graduate of the Naval Postgraduate School’s Executive Leaders Program\, the National Fire Academy’s Executive Fire Officer (EFO) Program\, and the Massachusetts Chief Fire Officer Program\, delivered in partnership with the Edward J. Collins Center for Public Management. He is also an accredited Fire Chief in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. \nChief Reardon holds dual bachelor's degrees: one in Mass Communications from Emerson College and another in Fire Science from Anna Maria College. His executive education also includes completion of Harvard University’s National Preparedness Leadership Initiative (NPLI) and Columbia University’s Leading with Impact program. Before entering the fire service\, Chief Reardon spent over a decade as an award- winning photojournalist in Boston\, with his work appearing on the covers of national magazines\, newspapers\, books\, and international broadcasts. He covered high-profile stories ranging from presidential visits and professional sports to celebrity appearances\, major trials\, and breaking national news events. \nAn accomplished speaker and published author\, Chief Reardon is frequently invited to present at leading conferences and institutions across the country. He has spoken at Harvard University\, the Naval Postgraduate School\, Firehouse World\, Firehouse Expo\, and the Fire Department Instructors Conference (FDIC) one of the largest fire service conferences in the world\, drawing over 35\,000 attendees in 2023. He also speaks at numerous private sector events on topics such as leadership\, crisis communication\, social media strategy\, public information\, and media relations. \nIn 2013\, Chief Reardon secured grant funding to create the Regional Old Colony Communications Center (ROCCC) an $8 million\, state-of-the-art 911 dispatch facility serving six communities. Under his leadership\, ROCCC became the first dispatch center outside of Boston to directly receive wireless 911 calls\, a milestone that continues to save lives through improved emergency response. In recognition of his expertise in emergency communications\, Chief Reardon was appointed by the Governor to the Massachusetts State 911 Commission\, a position he proudly holds today.
